What Are the Main Types of Gambling?

Gambling is a broad term covering many activities where someone risks money or something valuable for the chance of getting a prize. It is not just about walking into a casino. From buying a lottery ticket to betting on football or playing an online slot, gambling comes in several forms. The Gambling Commission groups regulated gambling in Great Britain into areas including betting, bingo, casinos, gaming machines, lotteries, arcades and remote gambling.

Casino Gambling

Casino gambling is probably the type most people picture first. It includes games such as roulette, blackjack, baccarat and casino poker, where players place money on particular outcomes. Online casinos offer many of the same games through websites and apps. The important thing to understand is that each game works differently. Roulette, for example, is mainly about predicting where the ball will land, while blackjack involves decisions about when to hit, stand or split. Knowing the rules before putting money down is a basic but useful habit.

Sports and Event Betting

Betting means predicting an outcome and placing money on that prediction. Football, horse racing, tennis and other sports are common examples. A bet can be as simple as picking the winner, or it can involve more specific outcomes such as the score or number of goals. In-play betting allows people to place bets while an event is happening. The practical point is simple: odds are not guarantees. A strong team can still lose, and a favourite horse can still finish outside the places.

Lotteries and Scratchcards

Lotteries work differently from traditional betting because players generally buy a ticket or entry for a draw rather than predicting the result of a sporting event. Scratchcards use the same basic idea but reveal the result immediately. These products are also a major part of gambling participation in Great Britain. Official 2025 survey data found that 48% of adults had participated in some form of gambling during the previous four weeks, while 21% had only taken part in lottery draws. Scratchcards were used by 12% of adults during that period.

Bingo

Bingo is a numbers-based gambling game commonly played in dedicated bingo halls, social venues and online. Players purchase tickets or cards and mark numbers as they are called, with prizes awarded according to the game’s rules. The social side is a big part of traditional bingo, while online versions make the format available from home. Like other gambling activities, it is worth checking the ticket cost and prize structure before playing rather than getting carried away by the excitement.

Gaming Machines and Slots

Gaming machines include slot-style games and other machines found in venues such as arcades, betting shops and casinos. Online slots provide a digital version of this format, usually using reels, symbols and predetermined game rules. The Gambling Commission classifies gaming machines into different categories based partly on maximum stakes and prizes. For players, the useful takeaway is to check the game’s rules, stake size and spending limit before starting.

Online Gambling

Online gambling is not really one separate game type. It is a way of accessing several gambling products through websites, apps or other digital devices. A person can bet on sports, play casino games, enter bingo games or buy lottery tickets online. This convenience makes it especially important to set a budget before playing. The latest Gambling Survey for Great Britain reported that 39% of adults had participated in some form of online gambling during the previous four weeks, although this dropped to 16% when people who only played lottery draws were excluded.

The smartest way to understand gambling is to look beyond the name of the game. Ask what you are risking, how the result is determined, what the maximum possible loss is and whether the operator is properly regulated where you live. Once those basics are clear, it becomes much easier to understand the difference between the main types of gambling and make informed decisions.
